Awapuni Horses for Coming Events
TRENTHAM AND FOXTON CANDIDATES PIUTHAIR AND HER RIDER (Special to THE SUH-) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Glorious conditions prevailed for early work at Awapuni on Tuesday morning, when the majority of horses claiming engagements at Wellington and Foxton were sent along. All the work was carried out on the plough, which was heavy with dust, as the result of the continued spell of dry weather. The Wellington Cup candidate, Piuthair (Green) was sent a round on the plough alone, the last seven furlongs being covered in 1.34. The hard tracks are hardly to the liking of the daughter of Blackada, and she has shown signs of tenderness. However, she pulled up quite well after exercise. Green will be on top in the actual race. Lobbin has Standard as a companion over' five furlongs, which required 1.8 to accomplish, but they were not asked to do their best. Both figure in the open sprint at Foxton. Kilmiss jumped off at the mile peg in company with the Rangetiro gelding from J.. Kelly’s stable. Capitulation, with her mentor in the saddle, joined in at the six furlong post and a furlong later the unnamed youngster dropped out. The other pair ran roughly on terms on the balance of the journey home for the Foxton cup candidate to complete the distance in 1.47 and the last seven in 1.34. Capitulation wiill be a runner in the Ruapehu Handicap on the first day at Wellington.
CROWN AREA WELL Following breakfast, Crown Area and Broad Acre were partnered in a scamper over four furlongs, the pair running the distance in 52 seconds from practically a standing start. The Telegraph Handicap candidate appears to have made a good recovery from the ailment which overtook him at New Zealand Cup time, for he was travelling very easily at the finishing point. Duke Abbey and Blimp jumped off at the seven furlong post, the latter •being a shade quicker to get going, but the Quin Abbey gelding was quickly on terms and hq,d a slight margin in his favour at the post, the distance being run in 1.34. Some Lad, who will be a starter in the Apprentices’ Plate on the opening day at Wellington, had Lady Faye as a partner over a mile, but the chestnut mare was no use to the Some Boy gelding, for he jumped to the front to clear right away from his companion. Some Lad, who likes to set his own pace, ran the distance in I.46—an attractive effort. Moorgas, who claims an engagement in the two-year-old event at. Wellington, had the measure of Le Champ at the end of half a mile run in 52J. The Gasbag youngster has made a good recovery from the knocking about he received in his one start at Awapuni. Novar and Keddar kept on terms throughout in a mile task which occupied 1.47. The former, who had the outside running throughout, was going very strongly at the finish.
Lady Raven, who figures in the Novice Stakes at Foxton, was sent along in company with Luayne. Neither went pleasingly. Boston, the Tea Tray two-year-old for whom a big figure was paid, will accompany New’s team to Wellington, and while the trip will be largely of an educational nature, he will be a runner in the two-year-old event. The youngster has grown into a very big sort and without doubt he will require time. With Shining Star—a candidate for the Novice Stake at Foxton —as a companion yesterday morning, Boston showed distinct signs of improvement. IMPROVED HURDLER Powhiri, the winner of t:#3 hurdle event each day at Marton, was given easy work. The Sir Antrim gelding will not again figure until '• Egmont, where he claims a flat engagement on the opening day, although he will no doubt be found going over .the sticks on the concluding day. The Kilbroney gelding Bolero, who was sent up to G. New from Riccarton, continues to show steady" improvement in his condition, but he is not being asked to race yet. Starsheli, from the same stable, is looking very burly. New has added another Acre representative to his string in the two-year-old filly Miss Field, whose dam is a Provocation—Gauze mare. The youngster is a nicely turned sort.
The Finland-Lovelock gelding Son O* Mine, who has been out in the paddock for some time past, has been brought back into work - following a compulsory spell as the result of an injury to his. leg while jumping the big fences. The chestnut is putting plenty of heart into his work and he will probably be qualified later far hunters* events. E. Watson has also taken in hand the Strowan gelding Bullford, who has been off the scene of activities for a long time. past. Bullford enjoyed an excellent run in the 1924-5 season when he started seven times for four firsts and a third. His last victory was obtained at the Aiickland Summer meeting of 1924 when he carried 11.5 to victory in the New Year Hurdle Race from a field of 13, the other place-getters being Maunga and Glenotus. Peculiarly enough the last race in public the Strowan gelding had was the Farewell Hack Welter at Marton, when Son O’ Mine, who was then owned by F. Davis, ran third to Olympic and Mountain Top, Bullford being unplaced. The same mentor has also taken in hand again the Day Comet gelding Fiery Comet, who has proved somewhat of an indifferent stake earner since coming down from the WTaikatq. R. E. Hatch has also taken in hand the Hymestra gelding Hymestrason, who :is'* now a five-year-old, and the stabhj companion of Mireusonta appears to have built up wonderfully well during his spell on the easy list. Hymestrason showed himself to be the possessor of a fair amount of pace last season, while he also displayed some promise as a hurdler and he might well prove a more profitable proposition in the future.
