NATIONAL AND LYRIC

NEW PROGRAMME TO-NIGHT “The Gay Retreat,” something nev in the way of war comedies, prodqped for Fox Films under the direction d Ben Stoloff, comes to r.he National and Lyric Theatres to-day. It is a hilarious pictuHsation of mohof the many funny situations the boys found themselves in when they took leave without asking permission during the late unpleasantness. Unlike the majority' of war comedies there is a definite plot having to do with the sleep-walking activities of the son of a certain millionaire and the faithful watch kept over him by his two trusty bodyguards, sent to Franc* by his father with instructions i never leave their young master out of their sight. Gene Cameron, an extremely popular young comedian, plays the leading role. Sammy Cohen and Ted McNamara, the famous team from "What Price Glory,” are his attendants, and Holmes Herbert, well known characte: actor, his father. Comedy is th e “thing” in the drank these days, and a laugh is always preferable to a tear if the inclination o! the movie-going public is any criterion. The Metro -Goldwyn-Mayer prodn> tion. “The Boob.” directed by William A. Wellman, will be the .second feature on the programme, and although there are a few scenes that may bring a tear or two, there are laughs a plenty that make it one of the mofpathetically funny pictures of the yea.
