MONEY ORDER’S FAST SPRINT

LATEST FROM RICCARTON FOOTFALL AN UNLIKELY STARTER (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Easily the best galloper at Riccarton this morning was the Paper Money gelding Money Order, who ran six furlongs in the outstanding time of lmin 15sec, and plainly demonstrated that he is fit to run the race of his life in Trentham’s big sprint race on Saturday. As he carried a fair weight in the saddle and ran his first three furlongs in the exceptional time of 35 3-5, his performance was undoubtedly full of merit, and if he produces his best t/ack form at Wellington this week it seems useless to look past him for Che winner of Saturday’s Telegraph Handicap. Money Order was strongly fancied for the Auckland Railway Handicap, and, as is well known, he ran third in the Ellerslie race, but those people who watched the Paper Money gelding closely declare that he should never have been beaten. Soon after the start he was badly interfered with, and it was some time before he could settle down, but when he did get going he simply flew and was well up in a minor place at the end. On the concluding day of the Ellerslie meeting he won the Bowen Handicap most decisively, and he has done so well since his return to Riccarton that he should strip right at the top of his form on Saturday. A SLICK FIVE FURLONGS While Money Order took the honours of the morning over six furlongs, New Zealand’s champion, Limerick, was responsible for the best effort over five furlongs. He began rather slowly, but once he settled down to his work he galloped as only a champion can and ran home in the good time of lmin 2 4-ssec. As he ran his first two furlongs in 24 2-ssec, it will be seen that the Limond gelding finished very well. All going well Limerick is to take his place in the Hazlett Memorial field, and with a race into him at Wingatui he should be in great order when landed at Randwick. Centrepiece got through strong work over a round, while Coupling, who has not long returned from an enforced spell, was let off with an easy task. Honeycomb and Luminant were companions in a sprint over five furlongs, which were traversed in lmin 4 4-ssec, and at the end the Thurnham filly appeared to be travelling better than the importation. OTHERS FOR TRENTHAM Magna Charta, who will leave for Trentham to-morrow, was hard held to beat Amor over seven furlongs, which were left behind in lmin 35sec. However, neither was required to do its best, and were only sent a strong working gallop. Assurance, who is invariably a poor track worker, surprised a good many with his performance over seven furlongs, which distance he covered in the excellent time of lmin 31 l-ssec.

He was picked up over the last bit by a stable mate in Hollywood, but the Gay Lad gelding always held his companion safely. Assurance is in great buckle at present, and with only 8.4 to carry in the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham on Saturday he will prove extremely hard to beat. Hoylake galloped over two rounds at a strong steady pace, while the Derby winner, Martarma, who looks very well, was restricted to steady work. Jarretiere and Thorndale were associated in a spin over six furlongs, which were left behind in lmin 18 2-ssec, and while the mare finished in front Thorndale would have done much better but for having to be eased along the back to prevent colliding with another horse who was doing steady work on the same track. Zaragoza hit out particularly well in a gallop over six furlongs, which she traversed in lmin 17 4-ssec, and it is obvious that the racing she had at Ashburton on Saturday has smartened her up. Nincompoop, who will be a competitor at Trentham, appeared to safely hold Stormy at the conclusion of six furlongs, which were run in lmin 17 2-ssec, but the Quin Abbey gelding does not do his best on the track, and race day will find him a different proposition. Paperchase, who was one of the early workers, slipped over three-quar-ters of a mile in lmin 17sec, but she was not sent against time, though she accomplished her work in an attractive manner.

Starflight, who seems to have benefited by the outing he had at Ashburton, hit out well in a task over six furlohgs, and is bound to race prominently if taken to Trentham. FOOTFALL WILL NOT START

The Autumnus gelding Footfall has not done at all well since racing at Auckland, and he will be allowed to forgo his engagement in the Wellington Cup.

Goblin Market, Eulalie and Golden Armour were shipped to Wellington last night, and that trio will compete at Trentham on Saturday. The Redfern colt Island Fastness, who raced unsuccessfully at Ashburton on Saturday last, is to be gelded to-day. Assurance will leave for Trentham to-morrow evening, while Magna Charta, Amor and Money Order will also make the trip North to-morrow. A. E. Ellis will pilot Crown Area, Duke Abbey, Broad Acre and Golden Armour in their engagements at Trentham on Saturday, while F. E. Jones will have the mount on Sir Roy, who won the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton last Saturday. The apprentice, W. Brown, has been engaged to ride Pink Note in the Wellington Cup, while he will also pilot Sudden Storm in the Telegraph Handicap, and other members of H. and A. Cutts’s team when the weights suit.
