CROSSING FATALITY
VICTIM IDENTIFIED WARNING SIGNAL UNHEEDED The victim of the railway crossing fatality at the old Mount Edsn crossing yesterday morning has been identified as Samuel Henry Elsmore, aged 57, of 23 Alexander Street, off Eden Terrace. Mr. Elsmore was a blacksmith, employed at Otahuhu. It is stated that his hearing was not good. The fatality occurred at 6.55 o’clock yesterday morning. It is stated by the enginedriver of the train that Mr. Elsmore was walking alongside the railway line when he was first seen. The driver blew a blast of his whistle, but Mr. Elsmore continued his walk. When about 100 yards away another blast of the whistle was given, but Mr. Elsmore just stepped in between the rails and' continued his walk in the direction the train was going. The emergency brakes were applied, but the train could not be pulled up in time to avoid the accident. The train was stopped in its own length. Death was instantaneous.
