FOUNDER OF THE ZOO
MR. J. J. BOYD DEAD Mr. John James Boyd, who was known in Auckland, died in WelUngto. yesterday morning at the age of 77 7“ ex-Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. Boyd wu also the founder of Bovds Zoo aRoyal Oak, which preceded the municipal zoo. Born in Hull, Yorkshire. Mr. Bovd came to the Dominion about 50 years ago. and after building houses in Wellington for some years, started a zoo at Aromoho. Wanganui. Later he brought the animals to Auckland.’ and purchased a property at Onehunga in 1911. After a number of years the zoo became involved in a controversy and lengthy litigation between the City Council, the Health Department and Mr. Boyd took place, the establishment eventually being closed. Several of the animals, including the lions, were removed to the municipal zoo. Mr. Boyd had lived at Wellington during the past few years. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Messrs J. Boyd, F. W. Boyd, Wellington, and E. E. Boyd, Ellerslie: and two daughters. Mrs. F. Barker and Mrs. D. Kean. Wellington. There are several grandcliiidren and three great-grand-children.
