MISS JOAN FRY IS ENGAGED
“Love All,” will be the score when a certain young man, now on his way from South Africa, reaches the Staffordshire home of Miss Joan Fry, one of England’s pre-eminent lawn tennis who was a member of a team which visited South Africa last year, says an English paper. Miss Fry, who came of age in May last, was unwilling to admit her engagement when she was interviewed by a representative of the paper. “I can neither confirm nor deny the report;” she said. It is understood, however, that the official announcement of her engagement is only a matter of time—just enough time for the young man to reach England and claim the hand of Miss Fry from her parents, whom he has not yet met. Miss Fry has enjoyed conspicuous success as a lawn tennis player both at Wimbledon afid in America. W. T. Tilden, the American champion, said of her in 1925,“ I regard Miss Joan Fry as the fifth best woman player in the world.” In the same year Miss Fry won her way to the Wimbledon final, when she was defeated by Mile. Suzanne Lenglen, and in the following year she beat Miss Ryan, of California, in the International Lawn Tennis Championships, only to be again defeated by Mile. Lenglen in the semi-finals.
