SANDERS CUP TRIALS

RON A WINS FIRST RACE AVALON SAILS SECOND Roha won the first of a series of trial races for the selection of Auckland’s contender in the Sanders Cup contest, to be held at Stewart Island next month. The race was held last last evening over a windward ahd leeward course starting and finishing off King’s Wharf. A fresh easterly wind gave the . boats a beat to the Sandspit Beacon and a run back to the finishing line off King’s Wharf. The race was started at 5.10 p.m. Avalon, sailed by R. Lidgard, was first over the line, Queen March, skippered by A. H. Wilkinson, Rbna, sailed; by Alex. Matthews, and Joan, with W. J. Potter at the tiller, following in that order. Rona went into • the lead shortly after the start followed by Avalon, Queen March and Joan in that order. The boats made a long board across the harbour toward the cable depot off Devonport. Joan was first to break tacks, and stood well to windward of Queen March. Rona and Avalon held further inshore near Devonport- before going about. Then all stood across harbour to Hobson Bay with Joan going well. With good judgment her skipper threw round and made the Sandspit Beacon. Both Rona and Avalon overlaid the mark, but Rona just succeeded in showing Joan the way round by three seconds. Avalon rounded 35sec later, Queen March did not make the objective until 2min 20sec after Rona. The fleet now had a run back to the finishing line, and before long Avalon took Joan’s place. Soon afterward Joan regained her position, but in the vicinity of Devonport Wharf A:valon went into the lead once again. At this stage Rona was still ahead of her rivals and finally crosed the line ssec ahead of Avalon. Result: Rona, shr 48min_ 50sec ...... 1 Avolan, shr 48min 55sec .. .. 2 Joan, shr 49min 20sec ...... 3 Also finished: Queen March, - shr 51min 50sec. , The officials were: Messrs. J. B. Johnston, O. Molier ahd W. A. Wilkinson. The second trial will be held to-morrow, starting off King’s Wharf at 5 p.m.
