Spirited Racing in Club Trials
PAIR OAR ROWING JONSON AND ANDREWS WIN The semi-finals and finale of pair oar races for Mr. G. Hogan’s trophies were rowed by the Manukau Rowing Club on Monday evening. First Semi-final. —R. Chappell (str.) and G. Cleal and F. Cochrane (cox) met A. Doull (str.), J. McComish and J. Dewar (cox). From a very even start both crews moved away well, and at Luna Park were still level. Here Chappell began to move ahead, and at the gap had a half length advantage, but with the gap crossed Doull had reduced this lead to a half canvas. Both crews were all out to the finishing line, and Doull crossed a foot ahead of Chappell, this being the closest fininsh in this season’s trials. Second Semi-final.—G. Jonson (str.), A. Andrews and J. Dewar (cox) met T. Morgan (str.), E. Hill and F. Cochrane (cox). This again was a
good and even start, and at Luna Park Jonson had a-half length lead, which he maintained to the gap. Crossing the gap Morgan spurted, but Jonson responded and still had a lead of a-half length when the gap was crossed. In the run to the finishing line Jonson further increased his lead.
winning by one and a-half lengths. JONSON WINS FINAL In the final Jonson met Doull, Jonson having Cochrane as cox and Doull having Dewar. The starter got the crews away to a splendid start. At Luna Park Jonson had a-half length lead, which he increased to one length after crossing the gap. With the gap ci'ossed both crews went for the line, but Jonson, increasing his lead, won by one and a-half lengths. The winning crew was G. Jonson (str.), A. Andrews, F. Cochrane (cox). Next Saturday pair oar t rials for Mr. C. H. Moses’ trophies will be rowed. Entries close on the day at 2 p.m. sharp.
