FOREIGNERS IN AUSTRALIA Western Premier’s Alarm By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Received 10.15 a.m. PERTH, To-day. THE State Premier, Mr. Philip Collier, stated that his Government viewed with growing seriousness the position which had been created by the continued influx of Southern Europeans.

Despite official assurances, there did not appear to be any slackenin!; in the rate at which these foreigners were entering Australia, and Western Australia seemed to be receiving more than its fair share. From June, 1925. to the end of , une last 4 335 foreigners had arrived in Australia. These figures did not. indicate that the provision that all Uien migrants arriving after July L j 9-“; must be in possession of £4O land inK money, or a guarantee of em ployment, 'had had any material e lect in preventing the influx.

There were, Mr. Collier said, probably more unemployed in the State at this time of the year than ever before. Reports from all parts of the State showed that the foreigners were ’being given preference, because in many cases they were prepared to work for food only. The State Government had made repeated protests to the Federal Government, but as this was entirely a Federal matter, it was not possible for a State Government to regulate the influx of foreigners.— A. and N.Z.
