“EARLY BIRD”
Sir Roy Penalised As a result of Sir Roy’s win at Ashburton on Saturday, he will be penalised 71b in the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington on the opening day of the meeting. This brings his weight up to 8.12. Northerners for Hawera Ned Kelly, Town Bird, Flying Juliet, Restaurant, Royal Lover, Illingar, Sletepy Sol, Lady Robinson, Wenday, Town Bank and Marble King are included among the northern horses nominated for the Egmont meeting to be held on February 2 and 4. Still Spelling Beacon Light is at present having a spell in the paddock. It was thought better to spell him, as he showed signs of soreness, but there is nothing seriously wrong with him. Condition of Lausanne Lausanne was the first to work at Trentham on Saturday, and he ran five furlongs without being sent out for time. The last four furlongs w'ere run in 50£see. Lausanne, who carried J. Olsen, had a good weight up, and he went well. His tender pastern is bandaged, but it is intended to run him in the Telegraph Handicap, all going well. C. Goulsbro will be his pilot. Wanganui Cup The Wanganui Club appears to be unwise in keeping their cup distance one mile and three-quarters after they reduced the stake, comments a Taranaki writer. Very few owners will be prepared to send their horses out for a trying journey like this for the small stake the club is offering. It would have been good policy to have reduced the distance to a mile and a-half or even a mile and a-quarter. The scribe is of the opinion that for all the smaller cl jbs the latter distance is the best, for it ensures a truly run race, while a longer race with a small field is always liable to be falsely run and develop into a six furlong sprint home. Playing Up Again Magna Charta was on his toes at the barrier in the concluding event at A/shburton on Saturday, and when the barrier rose he was last off the mark and the field had moved off some distance before he settled down to gallop. He was never within striking distance
of the leaders and finished last. A decision as to whether or not he ./ould be taken to Wellington was to ba made after his Ashburton race, but there was certainly not much indication from his effort to assist toward that end. If lie had left the barrier oil equitable terms, probably a better line could have been formed. Three for Trentham Shirley is looking in capital buckle at the present time, but she does not Slow quite the same dash in her work as she did last autumn, and she may not be quite so good as she was then.
One of her stable companions, Flicker, is a perfect little picture. She is a beautifully proportioned filly, and is a ball of muscle. It is a pity she is not a couple of hands higher, for she his heaps of pace. She is just the sort for pony racing. Polydectes is also looking well, and may have a show in some of the hack races at Trentham.
A Strong Team The team to represent Sir George Clifford at Trentham consists of seven horses, which arrived on Sunday morning in charge of H. Cutts. says the “Dominion.” Childsplay will have plenty of weight in the Wellington Stakes, but she is certain to run well. Another two-year-old in the team, b ull Feather, has been galloping exceptionally well, and he will win if he repeats his track form. Sudden Storm, a smart hick, will have to do her future racing in good company, and it remains to be seen whether she is equal to it. Front Rank has been a disappointment this season, but she may do better very soon, as she looks well. Sky Quest will compete in hack sprint events, and she is a likely sort. Wild Work, the remaining member of the team, is a smart galloper, and apparently she is quite sound at present. The seventh member of the team is Impertinence, a two-year-old bay filly by the Ace, from Miss Mimic. Good When Right
When Footfall raced at Ellerslie it was apparent that he was not at his best, and as a result his only start at the meeting was in the Cup. According to southern writers the Autumnus gelding is in the best of health at present, and is expected to worthily represent Riccarton in the Wellington Cup next Saturday. Footfall is recognised as one of the best handicap performers, and he now appears to be back at his best. Gallops at Hawera Reremoana has not been paid up for m the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. There is nothing amiss with him, as he ran half a mile at Hawera on Thursday morning by himself in 49£sec. On the same morning Bright Glow was given a good try-out over a mile. Bisox jumped off with the cup candidate, Airtight joining in at five furlongs. Going particularly well, Bright Glow ran the first half-mile in 50 l-ssec, the six furlongs in 1.16, and the full journey in 1.43. beating Airtight by half a length, with Bisox four lengths away. Will Now Try Jumping Chickwheat has again joined the active brigade at Riccarton, and according to southern advices, will be given an opportunity to distinguish himself over the battens. The Buckwheat gelding has not raced too successfully on the flat, and now that he has joined the jumping brigade his connections should experience better fortune, for he appears of the type that prove themselves adepts at the game. In addition, in the Old Country, the progeny of Buckwheat have demonstrated their usefulness over the sticks. All the Same The decision of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club not to permit the broadcasting of its New Year’s meeting did not prevent listeners-in from bearing the results of the races over the air, for both 3YA and 3ZC announced the results of the races within a few minutese of their being run. That the public wants race results is evidenced by the fact that at both the stations the telephone bells were ringing almost incessantly, the invariable request being for race results.
Encouraging Owners The Dunedin Jockey Club's committee decided to reduce the acceptances in connection with the Dunedin Cup meeting. The final payment for the Dunedin Cup has been reduced from lOsovs. to 7sovs, the Publican’s Handicap from 6sovs. to Ssovs., the Hazlett Memorial from ssovs to 3sovs., the Jockey Club Handicap from 6sovs. to ssovs., and the President’s Handicap from 4sovs. to 3sovs. Although there has been a slight reduction in the stakes attached to the Dunedin Cup, the gold cup trophy will still be at the previous value of lOOsovs. There seems to be a consensus of opinion (writes “Sentinel”) in sporting circles that the gold cups attached to the Dunedin Cud and Stead Gold Cup are two of the most artistic that are offered in the Dominion. Trials for Trentham At Wanganui on Saturday morning Covent Garden and White Ringlet, both with light-weights up, ran five furlongs, the former finishing a couple of lengths to the good in I.ls. The first three furlongs were done in 35sec. White Ringlet is to be a starter in the six-furlong hack race at Foxton next
Saturday. Mask covered a mile, being picked up at seven furlongs by Damaris. They were not unduly hurried over the first lialf-mile, and the full distance took 1.43 4-5, with Damaris about a length in front and going well within herself. Mask appears to have improved by his racing at Ellerslie. Damaris is very well at present, and it will not be surpi'ising to find her figuring prominently in her engagements at Trentham.
