A serious Are in the business quarter of Stanthorpe destroyed several premises. The damage amounted to many thousands of pounds. A disastrous fire also occurred at Murgon, where three buildings were gutted and another badly damaged by heat. The damage exceeds £IO,OOO. —A. and N.Z. GREAT TIMBER DAMAGE Reed. 11.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. Bush fires, caused by the intense heat which has ruled during the past week, are raging in many country districts, and excessive damage has been done. Large forces of volunteers are fighting hard to hold the outbreaks in check, but continual changes in the wind in some cases frustrated their efforts. In the Glppsland district many houses were destroyed. It is stated that the township of Flynn and Flynn s Creek is in danger of being wiped out. Timber districts are suffering severely.—A. and N.Z.
