ONEHUNGA SPRINGS
STILL GOING STRONG COULD SUPPLY THE CITY At the f meeting of the Oneliunga Borough Council last evening, Councillor Moor asked whether the water shortage in the city was likely to be felt in Onehunga. Councillor Stoupe, chairman of the waterworks committee, replied that there was not the slightest appearance of any shortage. “In fact,” he said, “we could supply more if we had customers for it. We have supplied the Mount Roskill iistrict with 26,500,000 gallons since last May. The electric pump recently installed at Allen Springs, Te Papapa, was lifting up water from a depth of 16 feet 11 inches, and in spite of almost continuous pumping the water flowed, in faster than it could be pumped out.” Councillor Moor: Is there any possibility of restrictions being placed on the supply to residents? Councillor Stoupe: None whatever. That question has never been considered. The Mayor: Several of my friends in Auckland have brought their cars to my residence, to have them washed, and although I have a meter installed I have not the heart to refuse the 1 necessary water. We are prepared to sell water to the city, but it will have to be taken away in carts. Councillor Morton: It seems sinful to see so much water running to waste, and I think a reservoir should be constructed on Mangere Mountain to conserve some of it.
