MR. C. 11 HOVERD, Secretary Takapur.a Boating Club and Cornicell Cup Contest. Few people who are not secretaries realise the amount of work involved in "holding down” such an office. The secretary of a club of any kind has to be a live man and this holds good afloat as well as ashore. C. H. Hoverd is one of the Waite mata's younger yachtsmen, and since taking up the sport of aquatics he has thrown mniself enthusiastically into both the hard work and the sporting sides of yachting. He has sailed in all classes of yachts from small centre-board craft to keelers, and has done a good deal of launching. The Takapuna Boating Club is recognised as undoubtedly the most alive of such clubs in Auckland. There is always "something doing” over at Bayswater, and this is the result of the efforts of a particularly keen body of officials. And to the fore in his club's activities is “Cess” Hoverd. as his intimates know him. who takes upon his shoulders a big share of the hundred-and-one tasks incidental to the successful conduct of so extensive an organisation as his club. It was fitting that Mr. Hoverd should have been elected secretary of the Cornwell Cup contest now being held in this port. He had put an immense amount of time into the secretarial duties In connection with the contest for several months prior to this week. Negotiations with the eight centres now represented here have Involved stacks of correspondence, doyens of telegrams and much working for "honorary overtime.” Then again organising of dances and social functions falls heavily on the secretary. Mr. Hoverd has done well since he took over from Mr. L. S. Davis, and Takapuna is fortunate in having the services of a secretary who gives of his best for the welfare of his club. ‘"Cess” Hoverd was a well-known hockey player and was a member of the Auckland Hockey Association for four years and was Junior selector for Auckland for the years 1925 and 1926.
