BOY’S LUCKY ESCAPE While riding a bicycle near the Papakai Road bridge, about a mile from the Taihape post office, K. Williams, son of Mr. H. Williams, skidded, and was thrown over a bank into the Hautapu River. In spite of the fact that he fell about 25 feet before striking the water, the youth escaped with only very slight injuries, and his bicycle was hardly damaged. RIFLE SHOOTING MATCH AT THAMES The Thames Defence Rifle Club held its first weekly shoot for 1928 on Saturday. The trophy, presented by the club, was won by the veteran rifleman of the club, J. Morrison, who put on a score of 91 out of a possible 105. The scores were;
MOTOR-CAR STRIKES POLE OCCUPANTS INJURED When a motor-car owned and driven by Mr. Robert Cashmore, aged 22, of 306, Jervois Road, Herne Bay, skidded in loose metal and struck a power transmission standard near Papatoetoe about 5 p.m. on Saturday, both occupants were injured. Mr. Ralph Fairlio was taken to the Auckland Hospital suffering from severe head injuries and abrasions. His condition this morning was reported as serious, but an improvement is shown. Mr. Cashmore was able to proceed home after treatment. Mr. Fairlie, who is aged 21, lives at 7 Abbotsford Road, Newmarket. The windscreen of the car was shattered the radiator twisted and broken and the steering wheel smashed. The chassis was also severely damaged.
