REBELS KILLED FROM AIR
AMERICA’S FIRM ACTION IN NICARAGUA I NO CHANGE IN POLICY By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. NEW YORK, Saturday. A message from Managua. Nicaragua, says a United States Marine air squadron to-day attacked Eichipota. Forty rebels were killed. WASHINGTON, Saturday. Fifty members of the American Communist Party marched around the Department of State Building, carrying banners bearing protests against the United States policy in the Caribbean, particularly in Nicaragua. The demonstration, which was composed of men and women, was orderly. The police did not interfere with it. PAN-AMERICAN CONFERENCE The political correspondent of the Chicago “Tribune” states that under instructions given them by Mr. Coolidge, who will leave to-morrow for Havana to address the sixth PanAmerican conference, the American delegates will preserve intact the United States’ policy of complete liberty of action in protecting its rights and interests by forcible means if necessary in the Western Hemisphere, particularly in the Caribbean region, and will permit no impairment of the Monroe Doctrine. DIAZ TO RESIGN? Rumours have been current that certain Latin-American countries may make an issue of the Nicaraguan situation. The position has been further complicated by reports that President Diaz, of Nicaragua, will shortly resign on the ground that the United States has not accorded him the support he expected, and that his present position is futile and undignified. President Machado, of Cuba, asserted to-day that it was not within the province of the conference to assume the role of tribunal or Judge in the Nicaraguan problem, or as regards the general policy of the United States. Reports from Mexico state that the Mexican delegation may, nevertheless, bring up this question.—A. and N.Z.Sun.
