HAMILTON SUICIDE
EX-SOLDIER’S DEATH RESULT OF DEPRESSION (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The inquest on George Birnie, whose body was recovered from the Waikato River at Huntly, was resumed before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., to-day. Evidence was given by Rowe Allen Hendry that at 12.40 p.m., about a fortnight ago, he was crossing the railway bridge. Hamilton, when he noticed a man on the line who appeared to be fixing a pipe for a few' moments, and then suddenly vaulted over the side. Witness heard the splash, and looking over saw the man rise to the surface 80 feet below, and he appeared to be all right. He then drifted down the stream. Dr. W. Fulton said Birnie had been a patient of his for several months. He saw him on January 2, when he was suffering from the effects of a spree. On January 4 Birnie called to see him and complained of “seeing things.” The coroner said there seemed to be no doubt that deceased’s action in jumping off the bridge was deliberate, and that his mind was disordered. A •verdict of suicide was returned.
