PARNELL TAIL WAGS AGAINST SHORE EFFECTIVELY

QUIET DAY AT DEVONPORT

Conditoins were all in favour of the batsmen at the Devonport Domain on Saturday', the wicket being easy, while the outfield was parched and bumpy' for the fieldsmen, and there was but little breeze to assist the bowlers. Parnell won the toss and opened quietly,. runs coming at the rate of about one a minute. Player and Saunders both bowled very steadily, and Anthony settled down with McCoy to take the edge off the attack. Much interest was taken in the i debut of Don Webb, the Mount Albert Grammar School midget, who has been one of the destroying angels in secondary school cricket, and who showed good form on tour with Mr. Beale’s colts during the holiday's. The youngster possesses a good control of both leg and off breaks, with an occasional ball which nips fast off the patch and beats the bat. Hay', a lefthander, found Webb to his liking, and with the help of an overthrow to the boundary bagged ten runs off two balls. The field did not appear to be most effectively placed for Hay’s strong pull shots, and he helped himself to top score with a forceful 46, before edging Dacre to Bush at first slip. Hay and Turbott added a welcome 53 for the seventh wicket, when Turbott popped Saunders up for the bowler to dash down the pitch and bag his second catch off his own bowling. “Doc” Aitken carried on the good work and, with a bit of luck, helped to raise the score to 183. for eight wickets. WEBB MISSES “HAT TRICK” "Webb was given a second trial with more success, getting Aitken smartly stumped by Scott, and then skittling Goodsir next ball. Stewart was last man in, and Webb had a chance of winning a cheap hat in his first senior game, but the Parnell stumper survived theor deal, and then stuck it out until the last wicket had added 36, and made the total 213. The manner in which the Parnell tail wagged gave the impression that the earlier batsmen might have profited if they had shoVn more enterprise and less caution. The scorched outfield made ground fielding uncertain, and Shore were unlucky with Hugh Webb straining a tendon in the foot, and Walters injuring his hand in the field. Shore opened in a dull light and Monteith was yorked by Aitken when he had scored six. Bush and Frater scored freely until the colt over-reached to McCoy, and was smartly stumped by Stewart for a useful %core. Frater played the bowling freely and seemed set for a good score, with Player settling down, when an appeal against the light closed play half an hour before time. Shore had scored 81 in 45 minutes for the loss of two wickets, and need 132 to equal Parnell’s first innings total.. Details:— ' PARNELL First Innings.
