QUEER MIX-UP
MISTAKEN IDENTITY POSITION FRAUGHT WITH POSSIBILITIES Toward the end of November a peculiar case of mistaken equine identity was made public in England, and when the last mail left the result of the inquiry had not been made known to the public. Briefly the facts were as follow: • In 1926 Gordon Sadler had two horses, the property of Mr. Drage, called Ayot and Faiza. Ayot was a three-year-old filly by The Vizier out of Caltha, while Faiza was a two-year-old filly by The Vizier out of Grayshott. Being by the same sire, it was not unnatural that they were very much alike, each being a bay. The only difference, it is understood, is that one has some white. At the end of the 1926 season the owner evidently decided on a change of quarters. Gordon Sadler was asked to send the two horses to the owner’s stud. Apparently they were turned out for some time, and Dobson Peacock was asked if he would take them. He agreed to do so, and he was advised they wquld be dispatched to Middleham. They did not arrive together, one being sent off about a week before the other. They were tabulated according to a letter received and entered in races. What was assumed to be Faiza, a maiden three-year-old, was nominated for races confined to secondseason animals. After two defeats she won a couple of races, and another patron of the Middleham stable took a fancy to the filly, and Mr. Drage was asked if he would put a price on her. Mistake Discovered The result was that the filly became the property of Mr. Adam Boazman. For him she won a race the first time she carried his colours, but some time after that Peacock was asked to send Ayot home. He did so, but when the filly arrived the owner wrote and said some mistake had been made and that Faiza had been sent. Messrs. Weatherby were informed, and the matter is being gone into. So far as is known, it would seem that the four-year-old Ayot has been running as the three-year-old Faiza. If such is really the case, the filly is automatically disqualified from the three races she has won. More than that cannot be said at the moment, but from what is known there would seem to be no doubt about the facts. If that is so the question of bets will arise. The last time Faiza won was on August 2, and while Tattersalls’ Committee have usually ruled that bets go with the stakes it would seem they would have to decide this case strictly on its merits. „ _ It can be argued that backers of the second in each of the races won by Faiza are entitled to receive, but as the bookmakers have already paid out and have little hope of getting back the money it will mean paying out over two winners if they are called up to do so by Tattersalls’ Committee. It is rather a ticklish problem, but nothing can be done until an officfial intimation is received from the Jockey Club. WAIRIO RESULTS QUEEN BALBOA’S CUP DEAD HEAT IN THE FINAL Press Association.
