NEW REGENT
“SERVICE FOR LADIES” Winter sports in the Swiss Alps,. eluding a sensational race down the fastest toboggan slide in the world, and a spectacular ice carnival, are some of the features of Adolphe Menjou’s latest Paramount picture., “Service fo-r Ladies,” which is now being shown at the New Regent Theatre. Snow scenes of exceptional beauty are said to characterise this phase of what Menjou declares to be the best picture he has ever made. High up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California, 24 hours by train from Hollywood, snow is to be found all winter long. By the frozen shores of Lake Tahoe, one of America’s most beautiful scenic spots, were the scenes made. A toboggan slide modelled after the famous slide at St. Moritz, reputed the fastest in the world, was constructed. There were made scenes declared by critics to be the most spectacular toboggan shots ever filmed. In a brilliant ice carnival, staged on the smooth ice of the lake, Menjou appears in the colourful garb of a hetman of Cossacks. Supporting the star in this glamorous tale of back stage hotel life and Alpine sports, is a strong cast headed by Kathryn Carver. “Peg O’ the Ring” gives an extremely interesting turn on the trapeze. This daring young lady infuses a daintiness into her act which is generally slacking in similar performances. The famous Music Baster series has always been popular at the New Regent, but this week's story of Wagner, the great revolutionary of music, is particularly attractive. The music of Wagner with all his thunderous works. “Tannhauser,” “Lohengrin,” “The Meistersingers,” “The Ring,” etc., lends itself to the phenomenal interpretation by the Regent operatic orchestra, Mr. M. Guttridge conducting, and grand organ, Eddie Horton. Mr. Maurice Guttridge plays “Masaniello” (Auber) as the overture and Eddie Horton at the organ plays “One Fine Day,” from “Madame Butterfly.”
