LON CHANEY IN “MOCKERY”
AT MAJESTIC “Mockery,” the latest photo-play of that king of character actors, Lon Chaney, is being presented as the chief pictorial attraction on a big programme being screened at the Majestic Theatre. Chaney plays the role of a strange, hermit-like peasant who worships a girl of the upper classes and is content to be her slave if only he can serve her. Then by a strange turn of fate, she is placed absolutely in his power. The bloodshed and horror of the revolution rages about them. The peasant becomes a leader, and, drunk with his power, he all but destroys the thing he had loved. His love changes to brutality and then the unexpected happens in a most dramatic climax and the peasant pays with his life for a disaster he could not avert. As the strange mujik of darkened Russia, Chaney has a role rich in unusual and startling opportunities. His' supporting cast is one of extraordinary ability, headed by Barbara Bedford as leading lady and Ricardo Cortez as the young officer whom she loves. A special feature on the programme is the official pictures of. the Tasman Flight, showing the two aviators leaving Wellington and preparations for their flight in Melbourne. Other items which should be of special interest to all sportsmen, and especially to Aucklanders, is a short film of our Auckland Girls' Inter-house Sports, held recently at Car law Park, and scenes of the Rugby match between the Waratahs and the United Services team at Twickenham. The Majestic Magazine, an Eve’s Review, a very beautiful English scenic, “A Westmoreland Glimpse,” an enchanting Australian scenic, “The Blue Mountains,” and last, but not least, an hilarious comedy, a comedy supreme, “What Every Iceman Knows,” concludes a notable pictorial programme. A superb musical programme is provided by Mr. Whiteford-Waugh’s popular Majestic Orchestra, which plays as the overture “Orpheus in der Unterwelt/' by Offenbach. Appearing oil the stage is “The Mysterious Soprano,” the possessor of one of the sweetest voices ever heard. This beautiful songster captiyates all hearts by her rendering of “Mussetta's Song,” from the world-famous opera “La Boheme,” “Last Rose of Summer” (Martha), and “By the Waters of Minnetonka.”
