LARGER ENGINES FOR N.Z. RAILWAYS
THREE ON ORDER MOST POWERFUL IN USE WELLINGTON, To-day. Three Garratt articulated locomotives, the most powerful and up-to-date type of 3ft6in gauge in the world, have been ordered by the Railway Department for use on the heavy grades central section of the North Island main trunk line. After lengthy negotiations, the tender of Messrs. Beyer, Peacock, and Co., Ltd., of Manchester, has been accepted, and the first engine will arrive about the end of next December. The Garratt type of engine measures 77 feet, and is in every way larger than the present A.B. locomotive in general use. Each engine will develop a tractive eort of 51,5801 b, as against 20,001 b of the A. 8., and the total weight is 146 tons, as against 84 tons 15cwt. The water tanks will carry six tons, as compared with the present four and a-half tons. Mr. G. S. Lynde, chief mechanical engineer of the Railway Department, states that this three-cylinder locomotive has many advantages. The type ordered is similar to the Flying Scotsman, which holds a world’s record on the non-stop run between London and Newcastle-on-Tyne. Other countries, notably South Africa, Argentine, India, and Brazil are adopting the Garratt type of engine.
