UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASE

POSITION IN AUCKLAND Although the number of unemployed registered at the Labour Bureau this week totals 670 compared with 442 last week, the increase of 228 is not as serious as at first appears. Not only was last week a short week but many of the unemployed have not registered during the holidays, as there were not many positions offering. Now they are commencing to register once more. Of the total of 670 men, 622 are classed as fit for heavy work and 48 as suitable for light work only. The figures the previous week were 411 and 31 respectively. During the week 32 men were placed in employment compared with 196 for the week ending January 7.
