Damage by Fire*. —Scrub and grass fires continue to do much damage in the Waikato. Large areas have been swept. Among the Sharks. —LieutenantColonel Mellor and Mr. W. Briscoe, of England, fishing from Mercury Bay, secured a hammerhead shark weighing 3101 b, and a mako shark weighing 2201 b. Forgery Alleged. —Bernard Allan Charles Cole, aged 23, charged at the Police Court to-day with forging a cheque for £lO, was remanded for a week. Sawmill Fatality. —At the inquest held concerning the death of Francis Hynes, who was fatally injured by a rolling log at a Manonui sawmill recently, a verdict was returned of accidental death. Remanded to Cambridge. —William Cumberford Green was charged at the Police Court to-day with forging a. signature to a letter. He was remanded to appear at Cambridge on January 20.

Hamilton Court. —John Walker, charged with alleged forgery at Hamilton this morning, was remanded to January 18, while Bertram Harvey Samuel Hayes, charged with failing to account for £9 18s, was remanded to appear at Hastings on January 18. Copper Wire -Stolen. —Leslie Henry George Sealey, aged 28, who pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to a charge of stealing 2761 b of copper wire from the Auckland Electric Power -Board, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Booksellers’ Conference. —A conference of the New Zealand Booksellers' Association commenced at Wanganui yesterday, Mr. H. C. South, of Wellington, presiding. A welcome to the delegates was extended by the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers. Routine business i was conducted largely in committee.
