TIMBER WORKERS
DOMINION AWARD WANTED QUESTION DEFERRED The draft conditions to replace those of the award just expired in the timber workers’ trade were brought before a meeting of the Conciliation Council by the employers this morning, but the meeting was adjourned upon the workers’ representative declining to discuss the question. Mr. P. Hally presided, and the employers were represented by Messrs. H. Valder, D. L. Clayton and W. E. Anderson. Mr. E. Phelan represented the workers. In view of the fact that his federation had taken steps to file claims for a Dominion award, Mr. Phelan said he did not wish to engage in any discussion at the present time. A Dominion conference was shortly to be held in Christchurch, and it was quite possible that as a result of that a question would be submitted to the Court of Arbitration to determine the point whether the industry should be governed by a Dominion award or otherwise. Until then he was not in a position to discuss the question. The commissioner therefore adjourned the meeting sine die.
