MORE EMPIRE TRADE

BENEFITS OF PREFERENCE VIEWS OF MR. AMERY By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright VANCOUVER, Wednesday. The Secretary of -State for the Dominions, Mr. L. S. Amery, in an address which he gave at Vancouver, said Vancouver had a strategic trade advantage with Asia and the Antipodes. Canada needed a tropical and sub-tropical Empire as a commercial complement and had it in the British Empire. Mr. Amery urged the development of Empire trade. He admitted that the British fiscal system was too narrow, but said the Dominions received substantial benefits from the preferential tariff. He said he had seen the prosperity in the Murray Valley, Australia, as the result of preference of dried fruits and wines. He lay stress on the resources of New Zealand and Australia, and the position of Canada to build up commerce. The Empire, said Mr. Amery, had worked too much in watertight compartments, each unit thinking too much of local problems and failing to realise how the Home market could be stfengthened. The speaker closed with an avowal of faith in a new era of Empire unification of trade. —A. and N.Z. __
