H.M.S. DUNEDIN LEAVES
WILL REACH SEARCH AREA TO-MORROW MORNING At 11.20 a.m. to-day H.M.S. Dunedin left Auckland and will proceed direct to an area some 300 or 400 miles out at sea in a westerly direction from Mount Egmont. The warship will reach the area to be searched about 10 a.m. to-morrow, some 65 hours after the last message was received from the airplane, the ship’s speed being at the rate of 24 knots. A systematic search of the ocean will be made in the hope that if the aviators have come to disaster at sea they will still be floating, either on the airplane, which can possibly remain afloat for many hours, or on the rubber raft which was carried, and which can be inflated by compressed air in a minute or so. This raft, if successfully launched, has a capability of floating indefinitely. The raft was equipped with food supplies in the form of biscuits, chocolate and water.
