DROP IN BUTTER
early recovery not ANTICIPATED easier market was EXPECTED “Butter market demorali*ed and slumped to 1565. Do not anticipate an early recovery.” Fsuch terms does a London cable received in Auckland yesterday help to shatter any producers’ dreams of a continuation of the high prices received earlier in the season. Other cables received by New Zea land merchants substantiate this report. The overseas market has registered a downward movement since the middle of November with few stationary periods where a revival eeemed possible. New season’s stocks of Australian, Argentine and New Zealand butter are now arriving on the London market in regular consignments, and on top of supplies still available from Northern Hemisphere sources, constitute one of the principal reasons for the decline. The movement was not totally unexpected, and by some of the leading authorities was forecasted last month. A slight easing in the market is generally to be expected after the holidays when an easier demand generally follows upon increased arrivals from the Southern Hemisphere.
