MANANA FLOR DE SUS AYERES (Copyright, 1928, QN the walls of the South-west Museum in California is inscribed the Spanish motto: “Manana Flor de Sus Ayeres,” which translated means: “Tomorrow shall be the flower of all its yesterdays.” The good and the bad of life come by way of a piling up. The volcano and the coral reef stand for two conceptions men have of the way success, character, achievement and ability come. The volcano idea is that they come suddenly, all at once. The coral reef idea is that they are built up a little at a time, as the coral islands rise from the additions of infinitesimal polyps. Exceptions seem to favour the first idea; the broad sweep of averages speaks for the second. Monks in the Hospice San Bernardino, above Lugano, in Italy, found in the visitors’ book the following:—“August 5, 1910. Benito Mussolini.” Mussolini was then a mason engaged in repairing an old house in Lugaro. Through a chequered career of many activities Mussolini rose to his preseut position. If you are thinking of writing your autobiography, 1 offer as its title. “The Sum.” And for the title page the line, “You are the sum of all your endeavours.” Growth comes from trying what is at present impossible. Ability comes from stretching for things out of reach. Character comes by way of trying to act what we want to be.
