N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS Pres a Association. CHRISTCHLKCH, Wednesday. A peculiar wind made some of the grreens tricky in the New Zealand singles bowling championships to-day. Keen and interesting bowling, how®t*, was the order of the day the J ay providing a real test of strength be- - ween the Dominion’s leading players. Max” Walker, the brilliant Auckland player, went out to-day, but he was in good company, two of Otago’s best known trundlers in the veteran skip, Harraway, and Carswell, of the raieri, also going under. The Aucklander, Muston, has so far successfully kept up his end, and Clarke, last year’s champion, and VVooller are also in the “one-lifers.” After the completion of 10 rounds yesterday those remaining in were: Two lives: Muston (Auckland), Edwards (Temuka), Reid (Lyall Bay). One life: Ferguson (Balmacewan), Lomas (Kelburn), Scott (Caledonian), Wooller (Remuera), Clarke (Carlton). Harraway was beaten by the Masterton player, Kerr, 16 —11, in the ninth round, Walker being beaten by Smellie (Green Island) in the same round, 18 —13. Carswell, who won the ■jingles championship in 1924, was beaten by J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) in the eighth round by one point, the scores being 18—17. The two /West Coast players, W’hibley and Mercer, both of whom had survived the first clay’s play without a loss, each lost their first two games by considerable margins. CLARKE BEATEN: THEN RECOVERS Last year’s singles champion, H. Clarke, now of Carlton, had no difficuty in disposing of F. Smith, of Kaituna, in the sixth round, having a lead of 12 at the final head. His form was not nearly so good against Tyrrell in the following round, the ek-cham-pion suffering defeat by the remarkable margin of 17 points. He recovered in the eighth round to defeat Smellie (Dunedin), 24—12, and scored another victory by beating Wooller (Remuera), 20—15, in the ninth round There was a sensational finish between Haworth and Lomas. Haworth was 7 up with two heads to go. Lomas was 3 down at the 20th head and still required 4 at the last head. These he got and beat Haworth by one shot on the extra head. Haworth is now eliminated.
