3—6, 6 —4. Miss Calvert beat Mia Powdrell, 9—7, 6—3, in the singles. The third round of the men’s stag}* between Bartleet and Parker wae the best exhibition of back-line driving seen here. Parker played the Auckland champion’s game, driving to the and back lines, and relying more oc steady placement than net play, fa many occasions he had Bartleet fightins with his back to the wall. Benleet’s service gained him many point!, but Parker was also strong in this department. From one all Parker took the lead, 2-1, but the Aucklander dm level, three all. After a grixn dririac battle Bartleet lost his service. The eighth gama went deuce focr times before Bart eet broke through Parker’s service. In the ninth the Auckland man tool: three service sea to win through. The tenth game mw another slashing driving battle, bet Bartleet could not be beaten and b* took the set —4. The Aucklander took the lead through the second set, which was fought every inch of the way, every game except one going to sevmi deuces. One of the best doubles matches wej the meeting of Bartleet and Mis*
Knight (Auckland) and Birkm&n an<i Mrs. Barkman (Wanganui), although the Auckland pair won 7—4, 6— l Bartleet and Miss Knight were t»*
questionably superior, but Barknua practically dominated the first set Bartleet was content to keep awsy from the net and rely on base toe driving.
Griffiths (Auckland) had a very narrow escape of being beaten by E Hooper, who ranks third on the dingles ladder of the Palmerston North Club and shows the benefit of his recent vial to Wimbledon.
Another good match was between the Auckland colt, A. C. Stedman, and tk doubles partner, J. Charters. Posh men plaved sparkling tennis, with isst, snappy driving and smart volleying aad overhead work. In the last departmf— Stedman demonstrated that he was tbs most proficient player at the tourns*. Griffiths was defeated in a trial of steadiness by Barkman, whose splencid net play and volleying often beat tn Aucklander. Griffiths was not impressive and he went down badly » the first set, but drove well in <» second set to win out 4—6, but in t—third set Barkman was superior.
