“MAX” WALKER OUT OF BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP
BIG OUTSIDE ENTRY LIST FOR ANNUAL N.Z. TOURNAMENT {Special to THE SUN.} CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Out of 560 players competing in the annual championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association, more than half are from outside centres. Auckland is particularly well represented. As matters stand, however, the entry list is smaller than usual, although most of the bestknown players in the Dominion are competing. As a result of the first day's play, H. Clarke, Rocky Nook, who is defending his New Zealand singles title, is still in, while appropriately enough, Mr. A. J. Benzie, president of the N.Z.8.A., also survived the first day’s eliminating series. On the other hand, •'Max.’' Walker, one of the most brilliant players in New Zealand, has been eliminated. The following remain in the singles championship:— SECTION A. No Losses.—Kerr (Masterton), Smellie (Green Island), Reid (Lyall Bay). One Loss.—Benzie (Linwood). SECTION B. One Loss.—Bilcliff (United), Renton (St. Albans), Effort! (Edgeware), Best (Dunedin), Stewart (Southland), Reynolds (Wanganui East), Bainbridge (Mount- Eden), Smith (North End, Invercargill). SECTION C. No Losses.—Horne (St. Albans), Whibley (Greymouth). One Loss.—Strong (Southland), Ramsay (Shirley), Edwards (Island Bay). SECTION D. No Losses. —Benefield (St. John’s), Lomas (Kelburn). One Loss.—Findlay (Mount Eden), Lloyd (Caledonian), Smith (Dunedin), Hain (North End). SECTION E. No Losses.—Trayes (Mount Eden), Clarke (Carlton), Gourley (Temuka). One Loss.—Aitchison (Caledonian), Chambers (Sumner), Wallwork (Linwood). SECTION F. No Losses.—Carswell (Taieri), Smith (Kelburn). No Losses. —Scott (Caledonian), Ferguson (Balmacewan), Garrison (Redcliffs). One Loss.—Harraway (Dunedin), Taplin (Kaiapoi). TO-DAY’S PLAY CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Play was continued in the bowling championship this morning with the sixth round of the singles. The weather was threatening, with a strong southwest wind. The bowls of J. H. Trayes (Mount Eden) were challenged yesterday by R. K. Aitchison (Caledonian), but after la test to-day the protest was dismissed Players eliminated this morning included Mercer, Greymouth, Taplin, K«-*iafpoi, F. Smith, Kaituna, and Daniels, Remuera.
