For cleaning most things there is nothing like careful washing in tepid soap. suds; and in order that washing may be successful all stains must be first removed. Mildew will yield to buttermilk if the garment is soaked in this for twenty-four hours. Lemon juice removes rust and iron mould, but you must soak in weak ammonia-water afterwards, to restore the colour. Paint may be removed with equal parts of turpentine and ammonia. To set purple, lavender and green, use two ounces of alum to the tub of water. Grey, black and dark blues are improved by being soaked in a strong solution of salt. Too hot an iron fades delicate colours. Never hang up woollen articles to dry, but lay them flat in a warm, dry place. TO TREAT WHITE SILK Borax water—one tablespoonful of borax to a quart of water —is best for Preventing white silk and white woolturnin S yellow. >Yash very delicate colours in bran yater. Two breakfastcupsful of bran J n a muslin rag (with plenty of space allowed for the bran to swell) should be put in five quarts of water. Simmer until the water is thick.
