EXCELLENT ENTRIES RECEIVED BRIGHT FLTURE FOR THE SPORT The Ngaruawahia Racing Club has benefited considerably already by its wisdom in again including two lightharness events on the schedule for the annual fixture which comes up for decision on Saturday, January 21. When the fine list of nominations was received those who favoured the mixed policy programme would feel elated at the success achieved. Owners quickly showed appreciation of the manner in which the club catered for this particular branch of the sport by responding liberally to the

call for entries, and when the secretary tallied up it was found that 36 trotters and pacers were nominated. Apart from the quantity of the contestants, the quality is quite good, and there is every assurance of big fields and interesting sport at the popular rendezvous. THE SPORT PROGRESSING Since the alterations and improvements have been affected on the Ngaruawahia course, it has appealed to many enthusiasts as an ideal place for training operations, and quite a number of promising maiden lightharness aspirants are prepared on the splendid grass circuit. Trotting has received a greater impetus at Ngaruawahia during the last two seasons through the presence in the district of Mr. Jim Johnston’s handsome and well-bred young sire, Metal The success attained by the son of Don Pronto as a result of his first season at the stud, together with the fact that his foals are without exception of the classy and racy type, has created a big stir in Waikato breeding circles, which will bear excellent fruit in the next few years. A good number of young Metals are to be found in and around Ngaruawahia, and with the up-to-date suburban course in excellent trim tor the education and preparation of young pacers and trotters, the pretty and progressive township will in the near future prove one of the most important trotting centres in the province. The progressive racing club deserves to have a successful meeting, and everything points in that direction.
