DR. FRANK CRANE’S DAILY EDITORIAL
FRIEND BED (Copyright, 1928) J WISH to speak of a very dear friend, who has been good to me, and every day has added to the happiness of my life. It is—Bed. I have a perfect Bed, for which I do not neglect to give thanks to God in my prayers. It is not bumpy, as some are; it is not too soft nor too hard, but just right, meeting my body lovingly, with tact and tenderness. It is a most friendly, intelligent and appreciative Bed. There are some who in a superior way affect to scorn the creature comforts, regarding bodily pleasures as low, and, in a manner, shameful. I used to do this myself, but have now more sense. What is good is good, whether for soul or body. I never go to Bed except Ibe sleepy. I would rather sit up till morning than profane my bed with contact without love. So that when I come to it the smooth sheets answer with perfect restfulness my tiredness. Then I enjoy one of the divinest bodily delights, if I may so speak, the delight of Going to Sleep. One by one, all my thoughts are detached from interest and fly upward into phantasy; nothing concerns me. I become a spectator of life, I drift away, watching the fugitive images, and am lost in the feathery darkness, the silent, warm snowfall of Sleep.
