HOWICK NEWS

HOTEL PLANS COMPLETED The work of clearing: the debris from the scene of the late fire, in connection with the Howick Hotel, is just about completed, and it is expected that the work of erecting the new building will be proceeded with in the near future. The plans are completed, and allow for an imposing structure, which will be in brick. The entrance hall will be in line with the main street, and two wings will extend on either side, set back about 10ft from the footpath. The new hotel will not be as commodious as the old building, but will have 15 bedrooms. ♦ * * One of the principal items under consideration when the Howick Town Board holds its next meeting will be the erection of new town board chambers. The Public Works Department inspector visited the proposed site, on a corner section in the main street, opposite the Catholic Church, last Saturday, and his report will be forwarded to the Local Bodies Loans Board for approval. If it is desired to go on with the new offices, it will be necessary to submit the proposal to the ratepayers. * * * Father Mansfield took his departure from Howick on Saturday. He had endeared himself to the hearts of the Catholics and Protestants alike, and carried with him the best of wishes in his new sphere. During the week a farewell party was tendered him by his parishioners, and there were representatives of all denominations present. A very enjoyable musical programme was rendered, and the chairman, Mr. W. Cooper, after eulogising the good work rendered by the guest of the evening, presented Father Mansfield, on behalf of the. parishioners, with a substantial cheque, as a slight token of the high esteem in which he is held throughout the district. \ Father Mansfield takes up the duty of chaplain to the Sisters of the Poor, in Ponsonby, and is succeeded in Howick by Father Downey.
