MR. O. MOBBERLEY, Life Member Victoria Cruising Club. George Mobberley is one of Auckland’s real yachtsmen of the older school. What he did not know about handling mullet boats is hardly worth knowing. ■'Tinny’* Mobberley, as his close friends call him. began his boating
career 30 years ago. He has handled the tiller in all classes of yachts, including the champion patikis Doreen and Colleen. In these boats he won several regattas, ineluding the Rotorua Carnival Regatta. He won three Auckland championships in
the 20ft mullet boat Decima. Mr. Mobberley was also one of the crew of the yacht Alma, which contested the Inter-colonial Championship race held in Auckland several years ago. This event was won by Laurel. He was also one of the company of ♦he yacht Restless when she won the Auckland-Tauranga ocean race. Few, if any, members of a yacht club have borne a greater share on the hard-work side of the sport. “Tinny” Mobberley has been closely identified with the Victoria Cruising Club since its inauguration 25 years ago. He served well as secretary for seven years and resigned the office in 1925. As commodore for a period of five years Mr. Mobberley was greatly respected by his club. He is now a trustee of Victoria and, in recognition of his services for the advancement of his club, he has been made a lifemember. In addition to time given generously to Victoria Cruising Club, Mr. Mobberley has helped the sport of yachting along in other directions. He has been a member of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee for many years and has acted as starter* to that body for three years. He has shown a keen interest in Sanders Cup contests and was judge and selector for the last contest held on the Waitemata Harbour. v He is Victoria’s delegate to the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association. Last year “Tinny” acted as check starter for the New Zealand swimming championships held in Auckland.
