Two Shops Burned at Taumarunui
DRAPERY STORE AND TEAROOM DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £5,000 (From Our Oxen Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. The fire brigade had a strenuous fight on hand when fire almost completely destroyed Mr. G. Gardiner’s drapery store and Mr. S. E. West’s tearooms in the main street of Taumarunui, shortly before 10 o’clock last evening. The damage is estimated at over £ 5.000. Both buildings were old wooden ones with single storeys. It is not known what was the cause of the outbreak, but it originated in Mr. Gardiner’s premises. Nothing was saved of the stock, about £4,500 worth being destroyed. The tearooms were severely burned, only tha shell of the building being left. The damage to stock in this case is estimated at £6OO. Mr. Gardiner’s shop was badly gutted, all the plateglass windows facing the street being smashed. His stock was insured for £ 5,000 in the New Zealand Office, while Mr. West’s stock was insured in the Northern Office.
