YOUTH DROWNED IN RIVER
RESCUE ATTEMPT FAILS BROTHER’S GALLANT EFFORT Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sunday. A gallant attempt by a young man to rescue his brother from drowning was revealed at the inquest on an 18-year-old youth named Angus Rennie Hibbs, who was drowned while bathing in the Aparima River, near Fairfax. He went for a bathe with his elder brother Clarence, who made strenuous attempts to rescue him. His efforts exhausted him and he struggled to the bank in a state of collapse and lay practically insensible for ten minutes. The body of Angus Hibbs was later recovered in Bft. of water. At the inquest a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.
