SCIENTIFIC PARTY VISITS WHITE ISLAND
EXCITING TRIP ASHORE CRATER VERY ACTIVE (From Our Own Correspondent) OPOTIKI, To-day. The "White Island Company’s launch, Whakari, left Opotiki yesterday at 10 o’clock for White Island, arriving about 2.30 p.ra. The visit was for the purpose of making observations and other scientific work. Included in the par+j* were Professor Marsden, Dr. Farr and daughter, Messrs. Campbell, Rice and Welsh. The party of scientists is expected to return from the island on Wednesday. They had an exciting experience in landing at the island owing to the heavy wash, being taken ashore in a basket worked by a winch. White Island is exceptionally active to-day, a huge column of steam being seen from the mainland coming from the crater. Conditions should be more than favourable for the purpose of the scientists.
