AUCKLAND TEAM FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
FEW SWIRL \S SENT A remarkable feature of the team chosen to represent Auckland at the New Zealand swimming Championships to be held at Dunedin on January 21 is its smallness. The women’s division and the intermediate classes for both sexes have been filled, but the Auckland Centre is reported to have studied the question of expense in cutting down the team to the minimum. The team is as follows; Men’s 100yds.— J. P. Farrell, L. Fairgray, J. Enwright. Men’s 220yds.—J. Enwright. Men's Backstroke, 150yds.—L. FaJrgray. Men's Breaststroke, 220yds.—N. K. Sylow. Men’s 440yds.—J. En wright. Women’s 100yds.—Misses D. Magee, E. Stockley, D. Grant. Women’s 220yds.—Misses D. Grant and E. Stockley. Women’s 440yds.—Miss D. Grant. 220yds Ladies’ Breaststroke.—Miss G. Pidgeon. Intermediate Boys’, 100yds, 220vds and 440yds.—P. Brownlee. Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke, 100 yds.—J. Magee. Intermediate Girls’, 100yds and 220yds. —Miss E. Champion. Intermediate Girls’ Breaststroke, 75yds. —Miss J. Thomson. Junior Girls’, 50yds and 100yds.—Miss M. Smith.
PAYING EXPENSES
SWIMMERS CALLED ON Some consternation exists among the swimmers of Auckland at the lastminute decision of the Auckland Centre to ask all senior competitors to contribute £5 each towards the expenses of the trip to Dunedin. A special meeting of the centre was held yesterday, when the treasurer, Mr. C. A. Edenborough strongly opposed paying the full expenses of the team. His opposition was successful and clubs and individuals had at once to find money for their representatives. Owing to family reasons, G. Bridson, the brilliant distance swimmer, cannot make the trip, and Farrell, in the 100 yards championship will be the only senior competing. When asked to-day for an explanation of the decision arrived at yesterday, Mr. J. En wright, chairman of the centre, stated that all other centres asked swimmers to pi.y half the expenses of a trip, and as it cost £ld for conveying a senior to Dunedin, the centre found it necessary to ask for a contribution. He also pointed out that all the clubs had lost heavily at the various carnivals held this season, and could not therefore assist in any material way towards defraying the expenses -of members. For juniors the cost was nil. It is not yet settled whether the flying squadron team or a water polo team is to make the trip, and as the former is the champion of the Dominion their absence would mean further loss in points to Auckland.
