ROWING
NORTH SHORE TRIALS TRIAL FOURS MCCALLUM'S SCHMIDT TROPHY There was keen competition among the four crews who entered for the trial fours held at Devonport on Saturday by the North Shore Rowing Club for trophies presented by Mr. Schmidt. The course was from the Sheer-legs to Duder’s Wharf, a distance of about one mile. The weather conditions were perfect, and the water was like glass. In the first heat McCallum (str.), Seager, Oliver, Barley, had a win from Norris (str.), Atkins, Evershon, Graham, by two lengths. Norris made a great effort when 200yds from the finish, but McCallum used good judgment and held its own to win easily. The second heat saw Korn (str.), Harvey, Jack, Moore, win by two lengths after a great tussle with Davies (str.), Challinor, McCallum, Yowles. The crews were rowing evenly until after passing the Devonport Wharf and then Korn drew to the front and went on to win with ease. Final:— • McCallum 1 Korns 2 This was the best race of the day. The two crews were going strongly at the Devonport Wharf, where Korns had a slight advantage. McCallum came at him here and drew level, and by increasing his stroke moved out again, finally to win by a length and a-half.
