The couturieres are at present exploiting an interesting revival in shirring. Shirred effects appear on most of the up-to-date Paris frocks, as do scalloped motifs. The return of the scalloped hem-line, both on day and evening dresses, is another of those increasingly numerous indications of the feminine trend of La Mode. Often variety is given to this form of hem with a simple but effective little device. The hem is merely cut so as to allow the square points thus achieved to hang over finely gathered flimsy material. For children who burn and freckle easily, make a paste of calcined magnesia and milk, let it dry on, wipe off (do not wash off), and heat will have little or no effect on the skin. For a bad sunburn apply the paste at night.
