EVERYBODY’S
“SOFT CUSHIONS” In his unique new comedy, “Soft Cushions,” which is now being shown at Everybody’s Theatre, Douglas MacLean has undergone a complete screen transformation. From the character of the bashful, timorous young American who couldn’t fly an airplane, scale a mountain or capture a lion, Mac Lean has become a swashbuckling, self-confident Oriental rogue, who willingly dares anything to win fortune and a lovely lady. “Soft Cushions” is from the pen of the late George Randolph Chester, creator of “Get Rich Quick Wallingford.” Like this popular fiction character, Mac Lean in “Soft Cushions” derends on his quick wits to carry him through many dangers. As the leader of a band of three thieves, Douglas successfully executes several “get rich quick” coups worthy of Wallingford, only to fall victim to a pair of languorous eyes in a harem window. By sheer bluff and bravado, he invades the harem, escapes from prison, dodges the executioner’s axe and wins the girl and a fortune.
John Emerson and Anita Loos, author of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” which Paramount is now filming, claim they are going to retire from all active work within a year, in which time Miss Loos expects to finish a new novel, “Gentlemen Marry Brunettes.”
