EXTRA WORK PROMISED
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF CHRISTCHURCH POSITION (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. A promise of extra, work was given to a deputation of Christchurch unemployed by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) to-day. The: City Council will put in hand works on Worcester Street, Cashel Street and Fitzgerald Xvenue and will also make room for more men on the casual staff The Prime Minister, Right Hon. J. G. Coates, and the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, have also been communicated with and have promised to look into the situation immediately. Mr. Sullivan criticised the Christ-
church Tramway Board for not helping in the problem to the best advantage. When Mr. Sullivan asked the men who lived in Christchurch to stand up almost every man did so. The response was the same when he asked for the married men to stand up. Mr. Sullivan said that a job on which £9OO was to be spent had been held up by the Tramway Board. It had been decided by the City Council to transfer the sums mentioned to work on Worcester and Cashel Streets and Fitzgerald Avenue. This would Increase the amount of work available for the unemployed. To ensure a better metal supply it was intended to get a quantity from a prviate quarry He was sorry to have to reflect on another local body but the Tramway Board was not helping to the best advantage. Certain work in Oxford Terrace had also been contemplated by the City Council but the Tramway Board had held up the work by calling for tenders, and in consequence, had reduced the number of its employees He believed 40 men had been put off.
