GRASS-FIRE MENACE

GASWORKS IN DANGER SPARK FROM LOCOMOTIVE Press Actociatlon. WANGANUI, Friday. As a result of a spark from a railway engine igniting dry grass in a reserve in which the works stand, the Wanganui City gasworks were menaced by a fire which broke out late this afternono. The flames spread rapidly to some tar, which burned fiercely, sending up a huge volume of dsnse black smoke. The city and Jastlecliff brigades were able to prevent the ever-spread-ing flames from reaching the big gas holder, the damage to property being negligible. One fireman had a foot badly burned by boiling tar.
