Car Somersaults and Falls 100 Feet
DRIVER'S NARROW ESCAPE PRACTICALLY UNINJURED Press Association. TAIHAPE, Friday. A narrow escape from serious injury was experienced on a sharp bend on the Pungataua Road, near 'Taihape, when a motor-car driven by Mr. F. Mowatt, manager of the Pungataua Estate, went over a bank and fell nearly 100 ft. During its descent the vehicle turned two or three somersaults and Mr. Mowatt, who was thrown out just before the car came to rest, had a miraculous escape from serious injury. With the exception of a few bruises and scratches he was not hurt. Mr. Mowatt had two passengers with him but they jumped out before the vehicle left the road. The body of the car was badly damaged but the engine did not suffer to a great extent. The bend where the accident occurred is known as the “turnable” and is so sharp that a big car can negotiate it only by going half-way round, reversing and then going forward. Mr. Mowatt, who was in a big car, was negotiating the corner in the usual way when the accident occurred.
