New Zealanders to Play French Stars

match against New Zealand on the Wellington Associations grounds at Miramar under Davis Cup conditions — two singles to be played on the first day and two singles and the doubles on the second day. The New Zealand Associ-
ation is endeavouring to arrange for an exhibition singles to be played on the first day by the third member of the French team. Preparations are well in hand for the erection of adequate stands round the court, which is being specially prepared. Sub-committees have been set up to select the New Zealand team and to make the necessary arrangements for the match.
TARANAKI TOURNEY BARTLEET HARD PRESSED A NARROW VICTORY (From Our Oven Correspondent) NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. The outstanding game in the tennis championships to-day was E. L. Bartleet’s narrow victory over M. L. Lampe, ! who was 6 —5 and 40—30 in the third set of the semi-final. The Wanganui man fought all the way making amazing recoveries, and he took the first set 6 —3. Bartleet being inaccurate. The next set saw the Aucklander pasting the side lines and winning with the loss of only one game. The seventh game he won with four aces. After a spell Lampe came back stronger, taking three games to love, but Bartleet took his service and evened the score. Four all and five all were called and then the Wanganui man led 6 —5. Bartleet came ahead 30 lcve and then dropped back 30—40. after netting two shots. Lampe needed a match point, but Bartleet made the score deuce with a smash down the centre and then took the game. 6 all. Lampe led 7—6 again, but Bartleet evened with service and took the next two games to win 9--7. A. C. Stedman x'an the Taranaki veteran Wallace to three sets, but lack of experience was the deciding factor. Xoel Wilson had little trouble in dispatching E. W. Griffiths, and he now meets Wallace in a semi-final. Bartleet and Griffiths and Ellis and O. X. Wilson meet in one semi-final of the doubles, and Wallace and Dickie and Lampe and J. B. Parker will play the other. In the women's singles Mrs. M-lody 1 and Miss Tracy have reached the jemi-
final. The winner of the Mrs. Scott-Watson-Miss Myers (Wanganui) match plays Mrs. Melody, ard the winner of the match between Miss McPherson (Te Kuiti) and Miss Fairbrother (Wellington) meets Miss Tracy. Mrs. Scott-Watson and Miss Sioman are in the final of the women’s doubles. Misses Tracy and Cameron me=*t Misses Myers and Calmer to decide the other finalists.
