Medical Men “Protect” Interests
QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE N.Z. DOCTORS INTERESTED “It would be very unfair at the present stage to make a statement. The question is receiving consideration, and has not yet been finally dealt with.” Dr. Parkes, an Auckland member of the Medical Council, made this reply yesterday in response to an inquiry from THE SUN. Sir Donald Mac Alister, in his presidential address before the General Medical Council in London had stated that the executive committee had -rad communications through the Privy Council from Quebec, Ontario and New Zealand, indicating a disposition in those parts of the Empire to withdraw from practitioners registered in the Medical Register the privileges of practising within their respective territories. . ~ The ground for withdrawal, it was suggested, seemed to be a desire to "protect” certain local professional nterests. If no modification of views on this subject could be brought about the Privy Council would have to consider whether the privileges granted by Great Britain to practitioners from these British possessions could lustly be continued. „ . “It would not be fair at this stage, to make any comment,” said Dr. Parkes, though he admitted that the matter was of considerable concern to the New Zealand medical profession.
