LOST OVERBOARD

PICKINGS FOR DREDGE The Harbour Board’s bucket dredge was moved to Devonport to commence cleaning out the approaches to the new berths, a point of the Iris bank having also to be cut away. The dredge will presently be operating at the area formerly occupied bv the passenger boats.

Probably there are hidden treasures awaiting the keen-eyed among the dredge hands, for in the 40 years that the boats used the old berth much jewellery and other valuables went into the water, the losers being latecomers endeavouring to clamber on to departing steamers.

A gang of men is also employed reeving the cables that carry the ferro-concrete balance weights, each weighing 18 tons, that counterbalance the weight of the steel suspension bridge leading to the new landing stage for vehicular traffic.
