HARD TIMES FOR MINERS
SOUTH MAITLAND FIELDS
ONE OF WORST YEARS By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Last year was one of the worst experienced by the miners in the South Maitland coalfields for many years. Pelawmain and Aberdare were the only collieries which were worked for more than 200 days, while records for the previous years show that there were over 12 collieries about the 200 working days’ mark. The deputies’ trouble and floods were responsible for over three weeks’ lost time, but sectional stoppages and slackness of trade accounted for many lost days. Out of 13 pays up to the end of the year, some miners drew less than two days a fortnight.—A. and N.Z.
